The singer-turned-fashion designer was describing her family as working class before the former footballer asked her to “be honest” and she admitted she was driven to school in a Rolls-Royce.

Fisher Stevens, who is perhaps best known as an actor from the hit TV drama Successionwas the director of the Netflix docuseries and admitted the now-viral quip originally pissed him off.

In a 10-minute video, Stevens lifted the lid on how that scene came to be and why it wasn’t meant to happen.

“She was quite nervous (during) the first interview,” he said in the clip from Variety’s Making A Scene series.

“Getting her to sit down and talk about her husband … she wasn’t so excited to tell me all this.”

So Stevens decided to schedule her next interview at home, where she was most comfortable and while David was out of the house, so she could feel free to talk about him while he wasn’t looking on.

“I was thinking, ‘God, she’s really sweet and she’s really open,'” he recalled.

“And she starts to talk and telling me, ‘We came from kind of modest …’

“Then David opens the door and he goes, ‘Be honest. Be honest.’ And I’m like, ‘What?'”

Stevens admits he began texting one of his producers in a panic about what to do, while his cameraman captured the interaction.

“(Victoria) was very embarrassed and nervous because clearly, he’s been watching, and I was mortified myself,” he added.

As for why the famous footballer was lurking outside the interview room when he was meant to be out of the house, Stevens believes it came from a loving place.

“I think he was nervous for her,” he said.

The director believes his interruption wasn’t designed to derail the interview but to encourage the former Spice Girls to be open and honest with Stevens – and, he said, it changed the game.

“I think he wanted his wife to not do the typical thing, and that just freed her because then the next interview, that’s when she was like, ‘Ready, go’,” he said.

“This interview changed everything. So it was kind of great he was there in a way, and it was a great moment for the movie, clearly. But it pissed me off.”

Two weeks ago, Victoria – who has just announced her own Netflix documentary is in the works, focusing on her fashion brand – clarified her comments in beckham,

”You know, my dad had a Rolls-Royce, and he also had a white van,” she said during a sit-down interview with Nicole Kidman for Vogue Australia,

“I came from a working-class background and so my dad in the ’80s, he was an entrepreneur, he started his business with my mum at the kitchen table and he did very well, so he bought himself a Rolls-Royce.”
