The speculation was only fueled when a few weeks later it was revealed the album had been registered under the genre of synth-pop.

Now we’ve got our ears around it, we can confirm the Swifties were 100 per cent correct.

The Tortured Poets Department takes the lyricism and melodies of Folklore with similar themes to red, and ties it all together with the synth-pop backing of 1989.

Half a million people flocked to Swift over these four words

So far, fans have mixed opinions on the ’80s New Wave rhythm of some of the songs.

Some are saying the dazzling synth behind tracks such as The Tortured Poets Department and I Can Do It With A Broken Heart is too much, while others claim they’re “eating it up.”

While some songs have that upbeat poppy feel, a lot of them lean more toward a medium tempo genre of synth-pop, unlike anything we’ve heard from Swift before.

With little promo surrounding the albums release, combined with the personal cover art, it could’ve been assumed the album would be one of her most private yet.

but The Tortured Poets Department has still shocked fans with just how intimate it is.

If albums like Folklore and Evermore swung wide the gate to Swift’s front yard, The Tortured Poets Department has flung open the front door of the house, inviting listeners into her unspoken world.
