‘I’m going to walk away’: The iconic relationship SJP had to end


Sarah Jessica Parker has been married to fellow actor Matthew Broderick since 1997, making theirs one of the most enduring marriages in celebrity circles.

But before she embarked on a relationship with Broderick, she enjoyed a number of high-profile romances, including with Nicolas Cage and John F Kennedy Jnr,

The actress was born in the US state of Ohio on March 25, 1965.

Parker showed an interest in the arts early. She studied singing and ballet, and was soon appearing on Broadway before winning a role in the sitcom Square Pegs.

This was followed by roles in films including Girls Just Want to Have Fun and Footloose.

Chris Penn

it was on the set of Footloose in 1983 that she fell in love with late actor Chris Penn, who died in 2006.

She spoke about the relationship in a 2018 People interview, in which she described making the movie as ‘heavenly.’

“I hated it, it was miserable. But getting your heart broken is necessary. You know that you can love somebody and you have resilience.”

Robert Downey Jr

In 1984, Parker began dating actor Robert Downey Jr after they met on the set of the film Firstborn,

Like Parker, Downey Jr had been acting since he was a child.

Downey Jr and Parker reportedly moved in together just eight weeks after they first met, and shared a home in Hollywood with fellow actors Billy Zane and Kiefer Sutherland.

It was during their time together that Downey Jr’s infamous drug addiction began to take hold, although Parker told People she had no idea about his addiction “for a long time.”

“I was like, ‘Why is his heart beating so fast? Don’t do so many push-ups before bed!'” she recalled.

But as his addiction worsened, it put a strain on their relationship. They eventually broke up in 1991 after seven years together.

“I felt that if I left, he might die. I believed I was the person holding him together”

Parker told People the relationship taught her “how to take care of myself.”

“There was a huge amount of time spent making sure he was OK. At a certain point, I had the courage to say, ‘I’m going to walk away and I’m just going to pray that you don’t die, ‘” she said.

“I will say, I don’t regret any of it. I don’t resent the time spent.”

In a 2006 interview with The TimesParker even admitted she was once enabling Downey Jr. by staying with him.

“I felt that if I left, he might die. I believed I was the person holding him together. In every good and bad way I enabled him for a long time…”

Downey Jr. told Parade in 2008 his addictions caused the end of the relationship.

“I liked to drink, and I had a drug problem, and that didn’t jibe with Sarah Jessica, because it is the furthest thing from what she is,” he said.

“She provided me a home and understanding. She tried to help me. She was so miffed when I didn’t get my act together.”

John F. Kennedy Jr

Soon after the split, Parker started dating America’s “favorite son” and then eligible bachelor, John F Kennedy Jr.

The two reportedly met at the theater in 1991, with Parker’s friend, director pal Adam Shankman, later telling People the actress “called me, screaming, ‘You’re not going to believe who asked me out!'”

Celebrity biographer Christopher Andersen wrote about their relationship in the book, The Good Son: JFK Jnr and the Mother He Loved.

He said Parker once surprised Kennedy at the airport after he arrived back in New York.

“The door of a limousine opened and out popped Sarah Jessica Parker. Taking her cue from swimwear model Ashley Richardson, Parker wore a mink, high heels, and – as a titillating flash of her coat revealed to John – nothing else,” he wrote. .

But the relationship was not to last, ending just six months after it began.

In 1992, Parker told The New York Times she found the media attention overwhelming.

“We would go places where there wasn’t a soul around and the next day I’d see pictures of us there in the tabloids,” she said.

“I have been a semi-public person since (I was as a child), but I never had any idea what real fame was until I met John.

“He’s a nice man, but for God’s sake, I feel like I should apologize for dating him. It has become the defining factor in the person I am. It’s pathetic. When I die, they are going to say, ‘Oh, yeah ‘Sarah once dated John Kennedy.'”

Kennedy went on to meet Carolyn Besette in 1992 and the two wed in 1996. They died in a plane crash alongside her sister Lauren in 1999.

Nicolas Cage

After that relationship ended, Parker went back to type, falling for an actor she met on the set of one of her films.

Parker was cast opposite Nicolas Cage in the romantic comedy Vegas Honeymoonwhich began filming in August 1991 in Las Vegas before production moved to the Hawaiian island of Kauai.

Rumors soon began that the pair’s onscreen relationship had spilled over to real life.

Whatever the case, it was short-lived, and neither have spoken about the relationship.

Matthew Broderick

They were married more than five years before they welcomed their first child, son James, in October 2002. Twin daughters Marion and Tabitha were born via surrogate in June 2009.

In 2008, rumors emerged that Broderick had an affair.

Whatever the truth, the couple are still going strong after more than 30 years together and 27 years of marriage.

After appearing in three movies together, and on Broadway, the couple reunited as co-stars in the 2022 Broadway revival of Neil Simon’s Plaza Suite.
